Well after helping the Midlands Air Ambulance raise over £12,000 at the ride last summer (that’s me on the right of the photo above) I hope to be doing so again this year.

After the success of Bike 4 Life in the last two years, the MAA have partnered with the RAF Museum in Cosford in 2012 to bring you two events! The first took place in April in partnership with RAF Museum, Cosford and was attended by over 1000 bikers raising thosunds of pounds for the Charity. The next is in July which promises to be the biggest and the best Biker Ride Out in the region!

Bike4Life Summer Run – 1st July 2012

This is the 3rd year of the Bike 4 Life Summer Run and this is one not to be missed! The ride out will start at the Birmingham Bees RFC Training Ground (home of the Boring Old Fartz Mcc) which is just off Junction 3 of the M42. We will ride out again to the RAF Museum at Cosford, taking in some of the best biking routes through Worcestershire and Shropshire.

With a rock band, fun fair and BBQ at the end of the ride, this will be a summer biker party to remember. It’s FREE to enter, you’ll just be asked for a donation of choice on the day.

Registration is now open.

Once registered you will receive an email that includes instructions on times and confirmation of entry to the ride out.

On the day of the event you will be issued with the route map and a tag for your bike to confirm your place in the ride out.

Remember, to gain entry to the event each rider must be registered.

If in the meantime you would like to know more, about Bike 4 Life Summer Run please email us at bike4life@midlandsairambulance.com

Thanks for your support

Now is your chance to see your design in print for Christmas 2012 and help raise funds for the Corps. The rules are very simple.

  • Design a Christmas card for 2012 depicting the Navy training Corps, serious or comical.
  • Size; Folded A4 maximum
  • The competition is open to all cadets

Each Unit will hold its own competition, running over the next few months. The Unit(s) will send their best 2 designs to HQ for judging by the end of June.

The winning card will go to print and be sold to all members of the Corps, families and friends; with the proceeds going into the Corps Central fund.

So get designing and hand in your entries to your Unit.

Dear All,

Following the OiC’ and UMC Training Seminar yesterday, I have been informed that a limited number of spaces have become available.

I will need to confirm the details of all cadets attending including any additional ones in light of this by the end of the week.

If you wish to add your name to the list, please email me at co.revenge@navytrainingcorps.org and I will pass on the details. You will need to pay in full on the day at this late stage.

Ladies and Gentlemen

It is hoped that this Friday, 18th May 2012, we as a unit will be in possession of some “replica” weapons in the form of Airsoft Rifles based on the latest version of the SA80, the L85A2.

As a reminder to all, these are not toys, and will be treated at all times as if they were the real thing.

They are live firing weapons in that they do fire small 6mm plastic balls with a muzzle velocity of around 65 m/s and an effective range of 30m or so.

At all times, you will be required to sign out any weapon and sign it back in again.

Before anyone is allowed to handle them, you will be taught the Normal Safety Procedures (NSP’s) and basic weapon handling skills. You must ensure that any weapon handed to you is made safe before it is passed across, and the same when handing it to anyone else.

Basic Rules to remember:

  1. Never point the weapon at anyone
  2. Make sure the weapon is unloaded when handed to you
  3. Never fire the weapon unless instructed to do so
  4. Know your NSP’s
  5. Always carry out NSP’s when picking up a weapon
  6. Never rest the Muzzle on any part of your body
  7. Always point the weapon in a safe direction

NSP’s

  1. Check for safe direction
  2. Apply Safety Catch
  3. (If on the ground) Pick up the weapon
  4. Remove the magazine if it is fitted to the weapon
  5. Pull the working parts to the rear and activate the holding open catch
  6. Look into the chamber and make sure it is clear
  7. If clear, with the weapon pointing in a safe direction) let the working parts slide forward.
  8. Aim in a safe direction
  9. Remove safety catch
  10. Fire an aimed shot in a safe direction
  11. Apply Safety Catch
  12. Close Dust Cover
  13. Stow the magazine (do not put it back on weapon unless ordered to do so)

Each Cadet will be tested on weapons handling procedures individually and must pass all aspects of the test before being allowed to fire any individual weapon.

The Test will be on the following areas

  • NSP’s
  • Magazine Filling
  • Loading in the Prone Position
  • Ready Drill
  • Making Safe
  • Stoppages
  • Unloading

ABOVE ALL ELSE, TREAT THE WEAPON WITH RESPECT AT ALL TIMES, IT IS NOT A TOY, ANY CADET ACTING IN AN UNSAFE MANNER WILL BE ORDERED TO SURRENDER THEIR WEAPON. NO IF’s, No BUT’s.

ALL BREAKAGES OR DAMAGE MUST BE REPORTED IMMEDIATELY TO A UNIFORMED MEMBER OF STAFF

HMS Ocean arrives in London

The Royal Navy’s largest ship made its way up the River Thames today as part of a security exercise ahead of the Olympics in London.

The amphibious assault ship, HMS Ocean, will be docked at Greenwich as a precaution against any potential terrorist attacks during the games.

The ship narrowly squeezed through the gap in the flood barrier on the Thames, to form part of Exercise Olympic Guardian, which began on May 2.

Four Royal Navy and four army Lynx helicopters will operate from the 21,500-tonne ship.

The ship is fitted with torpedoes, guns and radar and can house 1,100 people.

Small boats operated by marines are also present on the river.

During the Games the ship will accommodate 300 military personnel who are providing security at nearby Greenwich Park, and engage with Londoners by hosting public visits.

Last year it spent four months operating off the Libyan coast.
